Action recommended: Fetching marketing permissions from Shopify into Custobar changes

Shopify has changed how you must collect email and SMS marketing permissions. As a result, we are updating Custobar's Shopify integration to reflect these changes. Your action is needed to ensure that your customer data stays correct.

On March 27, 2023, we are changing Custobar's Shopify integration and how email and SMS marketing permissions are updated from Shopify into Custobar. This follows the change that Shopify has made to the APIs.

Starting from March 27, the email and SMS permissions will be updated from the following Shopify fields into Custobar:

Shopify data field Custobar data field
email_marketing_consent can_email
sms_marketing_consent can_sms

Previously both email and SMS marketing consents were updated from Shopify from a single field called “accepts_marketing”. Shopify does not support the usage of the “accepts_marketing” field after the end of March 2023.

It is up to you to use the correct data fields, as defined by Shopify, for your marketing permissions. That also ensures you send good quality data into Custobar and keeps your marketing campaigns and automations flowing nicely.

What happens to my customer data after this change?

New customers

For new customers whose data is not in Custobar yet, the marketing permissions are copied when their customer data is updated from Shopify to Custobar.

Existing customers

For existing customers whose data is already in Custobar, the marketing permissions are copied when their data is next updated from Shopify to Custobar. Thus, old customers' marketing permissions may change as they will be updated from the new email_marketing_consent and sms_marketing_consent data fields.

Exceptions to updating existing customers

Custobar has priority rules for data updates. Email and SMS marketing consents are not updated from the above-mentioned data fields in the following cases:

  • If the can_email or can_sms permission has been set in Custobar manually.
  • If the can_email permission has been set by an EMAIL_SUBSCRIBE or EMAIL_UNSUBSCRIBE event.
  • If the can_sms permission has been set by an SMS_SUBSCRIBE or SMS_UNSUBSCRIBE event.
